The alpaca is a camelid brought up in herds and their main production is the fiber/fleece having 52 known natural colors, from white to brown to black, and also a rich variety of gray. According to Incan history, the kings had named alpaca to be the ‘fiber of the gods’ and it was worn only by the wealthy people of that time. Alpaca clothing is made to last for a lifetime.

Alpaca fiber is softer, lighter and even warmer when compared to wool and other winter wear fabrics. As a matter of fact the price of an alpaca scarf can set the difference by the fact that they can last for decades without shrinking; it’s a money saver as you do not have to renew your winter clothing every year and cleaning is very easy as it is water resistant and any kind of spills can simply be blotted and cleaned.

Alpaca fabric has to be cleaned with a mild detergent, preferably liquid form. Avoid use hot water, chlorine bleach or harsh cleaners as these will cause damage to the fiber and hot water can even lead to matting of the fibers into felt. Due to the reduced static electricity of the fabric, it has a natural tendency to repel soil and dirt. For that reason, no need to wring or twist the cloth while washing. Sometimes the cloths may color bleed for the first few washes and this is only the excess color that is drained off and it won’t fade because of this. Alpaca fiber has a mesh pattern that picks up colors better than other wool fabrics.

To remove the remaining water after washing, place the alpaca clothing between two towels and roll up. This will drain the excess water into the towel. You can then place it flat over a towel or a rack. Never hang wet alpaca garment as it will lead to uneven stretching of the fabric.

If you are concerned about hand washing your alpaca garment, you can always give it for dry cleaning and make sure to mention it as alpaca fabric as the cleaning process if different for different fabrics.
