7 Ways To Increase Your Child's IQ

It's only natural that every parent wants the absolute best for their child and wants their child to grow into the pinnacle of perfection. While perfection itself may be out of reach, that doesn't mean that anyone should stop striving to reach their fullest potential. Here are some helpful tips to help your child reach that level:

1. Make arts and crafts with your kids. This bolsters their fine motor skills and enhances their imagination by creating things from scratch. Keep safety scissors, construction paper, glue, yarn, glitter, markers, crayons, and more within your child's reach so they can take advantage of their inspiration any old time. When you see them reaching for the supplies, join in the fun! Not only do they get to create, it also makes great bonding time for parent and child.

2. Build problem-solving skills by letting your child figure out situations for themselves. If they can't find certain toys, have them backtrack and search for them themselves. Let them put their things away in their room instead of doing it for them. Letting your child make simple decisions boosts both their cognitive skills and self-confidence.

3. Educational toys are outstanding for the development of a young child's brain. Consider Lego, Lincoln Logs, building blocks, or puzzles to help stimulate and strengthen their spatial skills. Physical handling of these toys also helps to develop muscular control. One thing to keep in mind when choosing toys is to make sure they are age-appropriate. Choosing a toy that is too "old" for an infant may inadvertently help to foster feelings of inadequacy within the child while choosing a toy that is too "young" for a toddler may bore them and not pique their imagination. Some suggestions for appropriate infant toys would be squeaky toys, musical toys, rattles, block, ring stackers or any stackable toys, stuffed animals, pull toys, and picture books made from soft materials. Toddlers tend to enjoy and learn best with puzzles, pedal toys, wagons, water toys, dress up clothes, and climbing playsets. Many older children also enjoy such kid-focused magazines as Highlights or Jack and Jill.

  1. Incorporate math into everyday life. Have your child count how many bananas are in a bunch while doing your grocery shopping, practice division by cutting their sandwich in half, or even just have them practice by counting their fingers and toes.
  2. Enhance your child's memory by participating in pattern recognition. Use buttons, beads, or even colorful cereal pieces to create a pattern, then cover it and have the child reconstruct it. Another easy memory game is to read your child a storybook and then have them tell you the story in their own words. Both of these techniques are highly effective in developing in verbal and visual memory.
  3. We cannot stress enough to read, read, read to your child. Reading opens up a whole world of imagination and can also teach them about many other things that they may not be able to experience in real life, such as other countries or cultures.
  4. Talk with your child as much as you can about whatever you want. This develops children's language skills and helps to place them head and shoulders above their peers. It has been scientifically proven that a child raised in a high-language household has an IQ 38 points higher on average than those who are raised in a low-language household

No matter what you do to increase your child's IQ, the most important thing is to ensure that your child stays engaged. The best way to do that is to incorporate play into everything. Play enhances the development of all seven abilities that are tested in kindergarten IQ tests, these being: language, information, memory, math, spatial, thinking and fine-motor skills.

Lastly, remember that nutrition is a huge facet in a child's healthy development. No matter how many excellent toys and play sessions a child partakes in, it can be completely hampered by poor food choices. So steer them towards fresh fruit and veggies, lean meats and fish, and whole grains. Lay off the sodas and fruit juices and stick to water whenever possible or wholesome milk. Your child will thank you for it.
