Similar to any other career, even project management professional feel the need to advance to managerial positions. To get there however, requires a certain level of commitment, skill and know-how. You don't just wake up one morning with a promotion unless you work hard and smart for it. Here are some ways to help you get those lead positions.

Receiving certification

It is not enough to hold a basic project management certificate. To lead, you have to have a distinguishing superiority in knowledge, skill, techniques and all of those require that you get certification. With certification also comes experience and understanding of different approaches to projects.

Multi-disciplinary objectiveness

To advance in project management, it is important that you speak not only to your team or to other individuals who understand project management, but rather to everyone. You have to have a multi-disciplinary approach and understanding of things so that you not only get your message across to your people, but to everyone in a room.

Expertise

Having a certification is a good start but it just isn't enough. You have to prove that it is not just your certification and that you also have the field expertise to get the job done when it is needed. If people know that they can rely on you, then you are well on your way to leading in project management. Of course your skill should not be all by the book, because if you can't think out of the box then you can't handle the job.

Complex jobs

In the event that you realise that there are some jobs that others are avoiding because they are complicated or too hard for them, you should make it your mandate to do them. It earns you extra points to be able to guide your team through those difficult jobs that everyone else avoids.

Vocal

If you are after a higher position, you should always let the management know about it. Being vocal lets them know that you are interested and that you are available. It also works to let them know that they should start evaluating your performance to see how good you are at the job.

Teamwork

Project management is as much a team effort as it is an individual one. In the event that you get the position, you will need a team of individuals that you can count on. It always pays to have an already existent working relationship with that team beforehand. At the same time, the better the co-operation, the higher your consideration for a managerial position.
