Easy ways to reduce wastefulness around the home

There’s an old adage, "waste not, want not", and at no time ever in the history of humanity has it been more apt and fitting. We stand at the twilight of our time, and with the world facing a resources crunch, stemming from the abuse of nature, it is our moral responsibility to try and minimize wastage, in our surroundings, so that in our own small way, we actually lessen the burden that our world faces. It is very essential especially to residential areas in major cities like Mumbai, to reduce wastage and make more effective use of the available resources. So here are a few tips to guide you.

  1. Wastage of materials during remodels: Reducing material wastage during home decor projects is actually quite easy, if you plan the entire cycle efficiently. Make a detailed workflow with your interior decorator and see that you purchase only that amount of material, like cement, iron, and other natural resources as will be used in the remodel. This enables you to save money while effectively reducing your carbon footprint.
  2. Social wastage: Look for ways to work in ‘experiences’ into your gifting practices. For instance, instead of expensive watches or clothing, which is an extravagance, look to encourage cultural events like concerts (and only buy digital tickets for the event), exhibitions, wine tastings and the like, which help create memories to cherish, rather than just another commodity that over time will depreciate.
  3. Kitchen recycling: In the kitchen try and reduce your dependence on commercial stain removers, bleach and other cleaning products. A mix of lime, vinegar and baking soda is just as effective as a bleach or stain remover in most cases. Recycle and reuse old PET bottles, after having consumed the juices or colas in them. You may want to look at composting fruit and vegetable peels, further reducing your waste.
  4. Unsubscribe to junk mail: Still receiving catalogues from home shopping channels, a tersely worded letter or email to these perpetrators of spam will ensure that you do not receive these 19th century annoyances anymore. You may also want to opt for digital bills for utilities like the telephone, cable/DTH and internet.
  5. Carry your own bags: When shopping carry your own cloth bags or ask for recyclable plastic or paper bags at vendors. At department stores and malls, pay the extra five rupees for a cloth bag, not only is it the right thing to do, you will also be stimulating a cottage industry of artisans making these little totes.
  6. Say no to tissues: Did you know that almost every 10 minutes an entire forest gets chopped down to fuel the world’s demand for tissues and toilet paper? Isn’t it just more prudent to use cloth napkins instead?
  7. Shop ethical: When shopping for beauty products look at brands that use ethically sourced materials and natural processes to make these products. It may be a tad bit more expensive, but it is definitely worth it.
  8. Less is more: Keep your cleansing routine simple. Wash, and shower with the same product, i.e. a shower gel rather than using soap, shampoo combination. Fewer products, less wastage. Also, use the old fashioned one-two bucket formula while bathing instead of wasting copious amounts of water showering.

Following these simple tips will ensure that your household is less wasteful and more eco-conscious. Remember, the contribution of each and every household is very crucial to the housing locality as a whole and each locality is thereby contributed to the whole city.
