Moving to a new city can be an intimidating process. You might be worried about how to find a decent place to live, how to get around and how to make new friends. Having access to useful information can make the difference between comfortably settling in and getting overwhelmed by a new city. We have some advice that will help, below.

Find a place to live

Finding a nice Boston apartment building to move into may take some time and patience. Consider hiring a realtor to make the process easier. Search Craigslist and PadMapper. Here you can find an interactive map of prices for Boston apartment rent. If you are moving to Boston for a job, ask someone in the Human Resources department at your job to help you out. If you’re moving for college, check your university site. Harvard, Tufts and others have community only classified sites that often list apartments not advertised anywhere else.

Get familiar with the area

The public transportation system is affordable and easy to figure out, so start exploring the city as soon as possible. From a walk along the historic Freedom Trail to a day watching baseball at Fenway Park, there is always a lot to do in Boston. Check out the Boston symphony – it’s considered to be one of the top five orchestras in the U.S. Visit the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Science and the Tea Party Museum. Don’t forget to go to the Boston Public Garden - the U.S.'s first public botanic garden.

Make some friends

Moving to a new city can be a great opportunity to start over and meet new people. Take advantage of every networking opportunity you get. Get to know your co-workers. Accept invitations to parties, concerts or plays, even if you’re not very excited about them. If you have the time, volunteer for an organization that does something you’re passionate about. If you like sports, consider joining a local team. Invite people out as often as possible.

Take advantage of technology

There are a few smartphone apps that will make life in a new city easier. Around me will help you find the nearest ATM, coffee shop or gas station. Hop-Stop gives you directions and allows you to find the quickest way to get anywhere. It’s useful whether you’re walking, driving or using public transportation. Groupon offers daily deals. By using it, you will discover new places and take advantage of great prices at the same time. Boston City Guide, MBTA Boston T Map and Boston.com News are some other apps that will come in handy.

Hopefully, these tips will make your transition to Boston smoother. It’s a great city to live in. Welcome!
