Every relationship requires communication to prosper and develop. The same is true of marital relationships too. Healthy communication is necessary to know and understand each other. According to therapists, there are certain skills that one needs to develop in order to communicate effectively. If learnt, these skills can help to develop lasting marital relationships.

- Be Open
Be open in your relationship. Do not hold back your feelings that need to be shared and expressed. Who will you share them with, if not your partner?
- Be Responsible For Your Feelings
Many feel that their spouse knows how they feel and what they need. However, this is not the case! You must not expect your partner to be a mind reader. So, it is better that you tell your better half what you expect of them.
- Maintain Constructive Attitude
Maintain a positive and a constructive attitude with your better half even when the situation is unbearable. This is because a destructive attitude does not favor effective communication. Instead, your attitude may rub off on your partner as well.
- Have A Discussion
Avoid yelling, shrieking and whining. This can be counterproductive. Rather it would be best if you sort out your issues in a mature way by discussing it with each other.
- Match Your Verbal And Your Body Language
As per research, seventy per cent of communication is done non-verbally. So, it is important to make eye contact as you communicate and refrain from secondary activities like flipping through channels and newspaper while you are interacting face to face.
- Do Not Abuse
Refrain from indulging in abusive language, insults and taunts. These can be very hurting can lead to resentment.
- Respond, Not React
Reacting back in case you do not support each other’s ideas can be counterproductive. So, it is essential to reign in your extreme emotions and keep a cool head.
- Choose The Right Words
Choose non-threatening statements to communicate. In case you have to voice your feelings or complaints, use “I” statements like “I feel…”, “I believe…”, etc. Avoid “You” statements like “You always…”, “You are…” etc; this can generate hostility.
- Do Not Make Accusations
Avoid statements that can attack the person’s character like “You Are Insensitive”, etc. Just point the behavior that has hurt you and how it can be changed.
