Catching the Freestyle Moguls French Cup in Méribel

For skiing with a bit of flair, you can’t get much better than the Freestyle Moguls French Cup. The cup is an audacious feast of trickery showcasing some of the world’s best Mogul skiers and it’s coming to Méribel. We’ve covered some of the key points about the event, including dates, what it’s all about and a few extra details on some of the other freestyle Mogul events happening around Europe.

The Event

The Freestyle Moguls French Cup is a celebration of skiers willing to push the boundaries of what freestyle skiing is all about, mixing pin-point techniques and creative flair. There’s a lot of excitement surrounding the event and it attracts large crowds of people eager to catch a slice of the action. If you’re in Méribel at the time make sure to check out the event when it begins 1 April - runs for 3 days on the Bartavelle piste in Méribel Mottaret. Both the men’s and women’s races go on throughout the day and the cup usually features some extra entertainment, such as live music and a big air show.

What is Mogul Skiing?

Mogul skiing is a freestyle form consisting of a timed run down a steep, moguled course where technical turns, speed and aerial ability are paramount to succeeding. As such, Mogul ski events are characterised by skiers looking to push the sport into more extreme territories, making it one of the most exciting ski events to watch. The complexity of what Mogul skiers are willing to pull off generally increases as a freestyle Mogul event progresses.

Other Mogul Skiing Events

Whether you’re familiar with freestyle skiing already or only just learning about it now, there are a number of other events happening around Europe well worth seeing this year. Head down to Italy on 8 April for the Trofeo Comune Di Valtournenche, a freestyle event held in the beautiful Breuil-Cervinia resort in the Aosta Valley region. Starting on 20 April and running until 23 April the Silvaplana Freestyle event in Switzerland is a combination of different skiing disciplines, including slopestyle and big air. Whilst not strictly a Mogul event, it does feature some of the trademark technical jumps, and Silvaplana is nonetheless definitely worth checking out if you plan to be in Switzerland when it’s on.
