As a tourist destination, it’s still possible to use the term ‘new’ to describe Croatia. Holidays there are a relatively new thing, at least for international travellers but this has a huge advantage for discerning visitors.

This beautiful country with its amazing coastline is still largely unspoilt. Croatia has also learned a lot from the mistakes made in Spain, Portugal and Italy during tourism development in the 1960s. Here, resorts have been developed sympathetically and in harmony with the surrounding environment.

One such is Opatija. A beautiful town set on one of Europe’s most picturesque coastlines around the Istrian Peninsula.

In Croatia, holidays to Opatija are popular because of the quality of accommodation, fantastic weather and great cuisine. If you’re considering a different kind of holiday, some of the following hotels in Opatija might appeal.

Design Hotel Navis

This is a stunning piece of modern architecture directly on the sea. The hotel’s proud boast is that the only time they need to say ‘no’ will be if you ask for a room without a sea view! The hotel also has a spa centre.

Remisens Premium Hotel Kvarner

A very beautiful and traditional ‘fin de siècle’ building right on the coast, it has boasted past notable guests such as Isabella Duncan and the Emperor Franz-Joseph of Austria-Hungary.

The ultimate in luxury facilities are provided including swimming pools, a fitness centre and spa.

Hotel Milenij This is a lovely town-centre hotel with a great location by the sea and with a very impressive range of leisure facilities. Being in the town centre, it is very conveniently placed for all the local attractions. The light and spacious Royal Spa has a gorgeous pool with sunbeds, where guests can enjoy that relaxed, after-treatment feeling.

Hotel Milenij offers a concentration on spa and wellbeing treatments such as facials and aromatherapy, and its excellent facilities are gently enhanced by sweeping coastal views.

Summary

In Croatia, holidays are often built around rest and rejuvenation techniques.

Although there is a long tradition of holidaying in this beautiful part of Croatia, from a western European viewpoint, it remains little known and unspoilt.

The facilities in all the hotels are typically first class and will appeal. Service is friendly and the weather ideal for those who like the sun without blistering heat – peak summertime temperatures here are usually in the 25C-28C range. Getting There

Rijeka Airport is only about 43kms from Opatija. An alternative is offered by Pula airport about 100kms away. Alternatively, one can flight to Zagreb.

All three airports are served by a variety of airlines with some budget flights available. Comfortable private transfers can be arranged by Prestige Holidays.

Remember, in Croatia, holidays in high season can mean that demand for these lovely hotels is also high, so we recommend to book ahead.

John Dixon is Managing Director of Prestige Holidays and visits Croatia at least twice a year. He has been providing luxury Croatia holidays as well as luxury holidays to many other destinations worldwide for over 30 years.
