Choosing the Right Shingles for Your Home

Most of us have no idea what type of roof we have on our homes. We just sit by year after year, comfortable in the fact that our homes stay dry inside when it rains, and the air conditioner keeps us cool, etc.; never, ever giving a second thought to our roof or what it may be made of. That is until, one day, wind, hail, or simply age causes damage to the point where we need a partial, or complete roof replacement.

There are actually several types of roof, each made from a different material. Below is a list of some various types of roofing materials and a little about each.

  • T-Lock - T-Lock was at one time one of the most popular roof types in Colorado, but the product has been discontinued and is no longer available. Due to this, even the most modest damage to your T-Lock roof could mean an entire roof replacement. Be careful when purchasing a home as some insurance companies are now charging higher premiums for homes with T-Lock roofs.
  • Cedar Shake - A natural wood shingle, cedar shake will curl and split with age, making them more susceptible to storm damage. This type of wear and the high combustibility of this material is causing many homeowners to replace their cedar shake roofs; opting for an architectural shingle instead. Hail damage to a cedar shake roof needs to be reported to your insurance company immediately as within a relatively short time, hail damage is difficult to discern from age wear.
  • 3-Tab - One of the most affordable roofing materials, 3-Tab is also one of the most susceptible to wind and hail damage. Many new ordinances are requiring 3-Tab roofs to be upgraded to something more resistant. A significant storm could very easily lead to a complete replacement being required on a 3-Tab roof.
  • Architectural - Many ordinances now require architectural shingles due to their denser composition and increased resistance to wind. Architectural roofs can resist winds up to 110 mph. Available in many styles and colors, architectural shingles also boast warranties of 30, 40, even 50 years.
  • Tile - There are two distinct, very popular types of tile roofing materials available; clay and concrete. Both are similar in composition and feature high durability resulting in a long life span. Clay is heavier and both are highly susceptible to cracking which makes walking on them to perform routine home maintenance a little tricky.
  • Flat Roof - There are several material compositions available for flat roofing. The most popular, and perhaps the most durable is called modified bitumen. Modified bitumen offers several layers of polyester and fiberglass.
