Dacian Fortresses UNESCO
Posted: Dec 18, 2013
The Dacian fortress in Romania is one of the oldest to have graced the world, especially bearing in mind the fact that it was built towards the 1st century BC. The fortress is one of a kind, bearing in mind the fact that it was constructed on a mountain just overlooking the Covasna town. It lies roughly 227 kilometers from the capital, Bucharest and offers tourists an awesome experience in terms of the exposure and the vivid historic and cultural aspects of the fortress. You should not be confused when you come across the name Fairies Fortress, which is also used to refer to this fortress. This is because it sits atop the Valley of Fairies.
This fortress is one of a kind especially when you consider its strategic construction. The fortifications were terraced and rose to an altitude of 900 meters above sea level. This was strategic because it offered a good view of the important regions, east Wallachia, south Moldavia and south east Transylvania. The acreage of the fortress covers around 10,000 square meters. There are a number of defensive units that were built in the fortress, and a good number of religious sites. The terraces were strategic because they allowed for safety of the fortress with respect to blocking any advancing armies in the course of an invasion. To help in this cause the terraces were fortified with solid sandstone slab walls what were between 1.5 to 2 meters high, and 2 to 2.5 meters thick. Each and every one of the terraces were fortified with strong walls, and with each excavation it was discovered that there was a possibility of other terraces being found lower into the fortress.
This fortress served its purpose as a stronghold for the Dacians for more than two centuries until it was eventually captured in the 2nd century. This was during the Roman-Draco wars that marred the 2nd century AD. Over time there have been three excavation works carried out on the fortress, between 1924 and 1943 by Al. Ferenczi, in 1949 by C. Daicoviciu and in 1998 by V. Sarbu and V. Crisan. One of the things that you will realize about the fortress to date is the fact that it belonged to an innovative ancient civilization that was very vigorous. Over time there have been a number of treasure hunters who search the region for valuable items especially due to the fact that Romania does not really have legislation to bar such activities going on. There are actually six different fortresses in this UNESCO world heritage site all of which together form the Decebalus defense system.
Of all the fortresses that make up the set of Dacian fortification, the one from Gradiste Hill is indeed the biggest. It stands on top of a plateau 1,200 meters above sea level. As a result of its size and unique features it served as the most important element of the Dacian defensive system. The other five citadels were Băniţa, Cetăţuia, Luncani, Blidaru and Căpâlna. As a matter of fact, so secure was this citadel that the plateau surrounding it marked the spot upon which the capital of the Dacian state was constructed.
This is indeed one of the most beautiful castles and fortresses in Romania that you can come across all over the European continent. Having been turned into a UNESCO world heritage site, it draws attention from so many people from all walks of life, and it is one of the most amazing sites that you will ever come across all over the world. Next time you are planning an expedition to see some of the regions in Europe with a rich cultural and historical heritage, make sure you consider this one.
