If you’re like most people, you spend quite a bit on hair care products; shampoos, conditioners, hair sprays, gels, balms, mousses and more. Yet you’re never really satisfied. You want the bouncy, shiny, perfect hair you see in glossy magazines and on TV. Of course you do, we all do! Unfortunately, there is no such thing as perfect hair. The truth is the seemingly flawless hair we see in the media has been professionally styled, loaded with product, and photo shopped. Since most of us don’t have the luxury of a professional stylist on call, trying to achieve that kind of hair is a bit unrealistic. That doesn’t mean you can’t have healthy, beautiful hair though! A few natural hair care tips will help you in your quest for the glossy hair you’ve always wanted. First, stop buying every new product that comes along. Instead, find a good shampoo and conditioner that work for your hair type, and add a good hair spray (alcohol free is best!) and if your hair type or preferred style needs it, gel, mousse or a leave-in conditioner. Shampooing

Before choosing any hair care products, first determine your exact hair type. It is important. For example, using a shampoo made for dry hair on oily hair will be a disaster. Choose a shampoo and conditioner that are made for your hair type. Now some people claim that shampoo is evil and hair does better without it. You may have seen a certain "not shampoo" product hawked in infomercials and home shopping channels, but here’s the truth. Our scalps produce oils. How much varies from person to person. Brushing our hair distributes these oils and they are actually very protective, that’s why when you color your hair they tell you to not shampoo for a day or two before hand. However, they do build up and need to be removed from time to time. Otherwise the hair follicles can get clogged and things like breakage and dandruff can occur. Plus, dirty hair is just not that attractive. The key is to choose a gentle shampoo and not to shampoo everyday unless your hair really needs it. If you work out daily, have oily hair, or work in a profession that you get dirty in, and then yes, a daily shampoo is needed. Otherwise every 2-3 days is best. Shampooing too often will dry out your scalp and lead to split ends. How you shampoo matters too. Don’t scrub hard and avoid piling your hair on top of your head. Instead work the shampoo down to the ends of your hair, and use warm, not hot water.

Conditioning

Conditioner is a must, unless you use a medicated dandruff shampoo such as Head & Shoulders. In that case, using a conditioner will literally rinse away all the benefits of the shampoo. Otherwise, use a high quality conditioner suited for your hair type. Use sparingly on your roots and abundantly on ends where your hair needs it most. If you have thin or baby fine hair, use a very light conditioner to avoid weighing it down. If you’re the opposite and have thick, dry hair, use a heavy, creamy conditioner and consider a leave-in conditioner as well.

Hair care does not have to be complicated; the simpler routine, the better your hair will be!
