All Year Round Fun in Lloret de Mar
Posted: Apr 19, 2016
Lloret de Mar is justly famous as a popular summer holiday destination on the Costa Brava. Fabulous scenery, wonderful weather and a delightful combination of an historical old town and stunning beaches, Lloret de Mar is the ideal place to visit with family or friends. But you don’t have to go in summer to get the best out of this charming former fishing village, as it is an attractive, fun and lively place to visit at any time of the year.
Here is our guide to five of the events you can experience in and around Lloret de Mar throughout the year. There is one for every season!
Carnestoltes Carnival King
The eve of Lent, usually in February, welcomes the annual Lloret carnival when the streets come alive with parties, decorated floats, people in fancy dress, music and fun. Everywhere you look the place is bathed in colour. There is great ceremony when the Carnival King (Carnestoltes) parades through the town and takes possession of the town staff. Following this, there are all night celebrations and parties, paellas cooked on the beach and plenty of the quintessential Catalan sausage and bean dish to sample.
Lloret de Mar Night Shopping
We all know how much the Spanish love their late nights, but shopping until 00:30am? In Lloret de Mar, Night Shopping begins on Friday 8th May when there are also fashion shows and live music to mark the occasion. The place is a hive of activity with people topping up their summer wardrobes and enjoying a drink or two under the late spring skies.
Americanos Fair
Step back in time at the Americanos Fair in November. This vivid celebration commemorates the Indianos, the people who left to make their fortune in America before returning with wealthy businesses. These people had an important role to play in the way the history, culture and social life developed in Lloret de Mar. The Fair - through demonstrations, theatre, exhibitions, guided tours, rum tastings and other presentations - relates all elements of this prosperous time in the village.
Tirada a l’Art (Casting the Net)
This fishing technique that involves the fishermen casting a net from the shore was the one used for many generations by Lloret’s local fishermen. When dawn breaks on the first Sunday in February and the first one in December, everyone is invited to get involved in a local commemoration to those who rely on the sea to make a living. In days gone by, anyone was welcome to help the fishermen cast their heavy nets and in exchange were given fish or a little money. Today, all those that come down at daybreak to the beach at N'es Trajo d'en Reyné can help drag in the net. After the nets have been hauled, a breakfast is served showcasing the fish caught.
With so much going on all year round in Lloret de Mar, you are guaranteed a great holiday regardless of when you travel.
