Whether you have the jitters or can’t help yourself from feeling excited, the time has come for you embark on a new journey of pursuing your education in one of the world’s best countries for education –Canada!

It has most likely already been at least a few weeks since you received your letter of acceptance from your University, ESL institute, or Career College, and hopefully your Student Visa or Tourist Permit as well.

While you still have time, it is important to consider some of the things you will have to pack during your travel.

The following is checklist of all the essential things you will require as an international student:

Passport and VISA

Your visa and passport are the most important things you will need to travel. Your passport must be up-to-date. Make sure it’s not expiring anytime soon.

Normally you are required to have a minimum of six months left on your passport from the date of your departure from your home country. You should also ensure that you have a valid student VISA for Canada if studying for more than 24 weeks, because without it you may be refused entry by Canada Immigration.

Keep a photocopy of your passport and Canadian visa safely packed in a different place than where you normally store your passport- this way, if you ever lose the original you will at least have some kind of documentation to help speed up the passport/visa replacement process.

Flight ticket

Likewise, be sure that you do not forget to make a copy of your flight ticket. After booking and confirming your flight, print a copy of your e-ticket containing all the relevant flight details.

This way, if your mobile device is lost or the battery fails, you will still have a hard copy that will allow you to board your flight without delay. Make sure you do not leave the printing until the last few hours before your flight either, only to find out our your printer is out of ink!

Educational documents

You also need to make sure that you keep your original letter of acceptance from the university, ESL school, high school, or career college confirming your unconditional admission to the institute. This is an important document that the customs/immigration officer might require from you as evidence for your intention to study in Canada.

In addition, you will also need to pack all of your documents that were required for the admission process such as your SAT/A-level/IB scores. If you are pursuing a masters degree in Canada, you will also be required to bring your bachelors degree and transcripts as well as copy of score such as that of IELTS, TOEFL, and GMAT.

Accommodation confirmation

Do not forget to pack your accommodation booking and confirmation details. Whether you have booked a Homestay or an alternate type or accommodation, proof of your booking confirmation details will almost certainly be requested upon your entry to Canada.

You can also choose to arrange a pickup service from the airport to your accommodation that will relieve you of a lot of stress and save you time as well.

Spare cash

You should not forget to keep some money with you for buying food and drink items as well as for emergency spending.

You will have to convert your home country’s currency to Canadian dollars so be sure to check the exchange rates in advance so you know how much exactly you have to convert to have sufficient money.

American dollars are also accepted everywhere in Canada, but be aware you may not get the best exchange rate when making purchases this way.
