Lahore served as the capital city of the Sikh Empire during the rule of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the 18th century. The most famous restoration work included the decaying gardens at Shalimar which was built by Shah Jahan and adding a second circuit of outer walls that followed the outline of Akbar’s original walls for the city.
