Are you also the one who have repeatedly seen images with hashtag ‘#SoloTrip’ on your Facebook news feed and wondered, What is it like to travel alone? What do people do? Don’t they get bored? I too had these questions until a few months ago when I took my first solo trip. Since then, my perspective has changed completely. I have started preaching people the importance of taking a solo trip once in their lifetime.

This concept originated in the west where an individual would take a long break from his/her daily job/routine and would travel around the globe with an aim to explore. Until recently this concept was very much alien to us because we strongly believed in community living. We never thought of travelling alone. For us, travel has always been a leisure activity which was to be enjoyed with friends, family or colleagues. Like many other things, the concept has gained huge popularity in India, especially among the youth, due to the western influence. However, the concept is still at a very nascent stage and is misunderstood by the majority.

In order to make a solo trip really fruitful, it is very important to understand the aim behind taking the same. If you go on a trip with an aim to get high or enjoy the luxuries of a five-star hotel or getting hooked to a new girl outside a bar or do the same things that you would have done if you would have been with your friends or colleagues then there is no point travelling alone. You should aim to experience something that you wouldn’t otherwise.

Solo trip provides you with the liberty to do things at your own wish. It provides you with an opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. Imagine you are taking a walk on a beach and you come across a person who is playing the guitar, you are mesmerised by the sound and you take a moment to appreciate. You start a conversation with this unknown soul and become friends forever. This is highly unlikely when you are with a group. A solo trip provides you with many such moments. Solo trip also makes you a better money manager. You take a certain target and start your journey. You cut down on your expense wherever needed. You reallocate your funds where you think it's necessary. Imagine if you only have a thousand rupees in your pocket and you are on the last leg of your trip. You have to manage your stay but unexpectedly you come to know that the place is also famous for bungee jumping. Nine out of ten times you will compromise on your stay for the alternate experience. This is generally not possible when you are travelling with a group as you tend to go with the flow.

A solo trip makes you confident and courageous. When you are on a solo trip, you take your own decisions, manage your own expenses, counter the most heart-pounding situations and much more. All these experiences bring about a great transformation in your personality. And last but nor the least, the trip provides you with just that right break that you need for self-analysis. When you are travelling alone you have a lot of time at your hand. You tend to analyse a lot about yourself in terms of your behaviour, your career, your family life, etc. We generally see a huge change in a person when he/she is back from the trip.

So if you still haven’t experienced this thrill, it’s time to pack your bag.
