The Pros And Cons Of Distance Learning Education
Posted: May 18, 2016
In today’s world where every kind of information has become easily accessible, thanks to the internet, distance learning has become a very common way of getting educated. The various types and ways of receiving distance education are also gradually progressing.
WHAT IS DISTANCE LEARNING EDUCATION?
It is the use of technology to end the communication barriers of receiving education from a college/university that could be situated on the other side of the globe. It is the means of receiving education from that college/university without actually being there. Yes, it is that amazing! But before making the choice of receiving education through this way, it is preferable that they weigh both its pros and cons. Here is a list of the advantages and disadvantages in distance learning education.
THE PROS
Flexibility: Through this method, it becomes easier to plan your studying schedule. You are able to study at your chosen time.
Ease: The desired course can be taken at any time without depending on a university’s schedule.
Variety: There are a variety of subjects, available online, to choose from.
Low course cost: The cost of distance learning courses is relatively less compared to that of the college courses.
No traveling cost: The cost of traveling is avoided in distance learning programs.
Accessibility: The online courses can be accessed from anywhere, as long as internet is present.
Suitable for some: For some students, this is the best option. It may be because they are introverted or unable to focus in a room full of other students. They learn better when alone.
THE CONS
Lack of face to face interaction: The student is unable to interact personally with the teachers or the classmates. This makes it difficult for him/her to ask questions and get detailed prompt responses.
Need for a push: Unfortunately, this course of study requires a high level of commitment and continuous motivation. The student knows that he does not have to actually get to the class, therefore he is prone to procrastinate.
Repute issue: Even though the whole idea of distance learning has become quite common now but the reputation issue still exists. Distance learning certificates are considered less reputable than those received in a regular college program.
Inability to experience the ‘college life’: No matter how much easy and flexible the distance learning program seems, it is unable to offer the actual ambiance as it cannot resonate the essence of how college life really is.From this aspect, the distance learning method falls short of providing the students with the ‘experience’ of being in college.
IT’S ALL ABOUT WHAT SUITS YOU BETTER
It is true that not every person is the same and each one of them has his/her own preferences when it comes to studying. Therefore, while many are interested in opting for regular classes, others prefer doing distance learning. While some students learn more during face to face interactions, others understand better by doing the research themselves. Hence, it all depends on the person thus it is significant that he/she deliberates over it before making a choice.
