London City Airport may soon be expanded, putting Thamesmead under jet noise pollution. The expansion will make it easier to find the cheapest parking near London City Airport offers, since there will be more space.

This approval comes after the new mayor Sadiq Khan dismissed an objection made by City Hall. The objection sought to bar the airport from getting more land for the expansion.

This objection from the Greater London Authority (GLA) was established by the former mayor Boris Johnson. Mr Boris, who strongly stands in opposition to the plans, has been a campaigner for another proposed project, the Boris Island project. According to Mr Boris, the island which is proposed to be built on the Thames Estuary is a much better alternative than the expansion. But for those looking for the cheapest parking offers, the expansion might be good news.

Although it was unexpected, his successor, Mayor Sadiq, has withdrawn the objection to its move to acquire the land, which is currently under the control of the GLA.

Speaking for city's mayor, one spokesman said: "Mayor Sadiq changed his mind in favour of the proposed purchase land from City Hall after considering new evidence that was recently submitted. There was also some influence from the ongoing negotiations.

Should the project be successfully launched and completed, travellers can expect more money off long stay London City airport car parking, with the reduced congestion at the airport.

But even in light of such benefits as more London City airport park and ride discounts, a campaigner for Stop City Airport, Alan Haughton said in a statement: "It is demoralising to the people who thought they had ushered in the most trustworthy mayor, and it says to businesses that they can do whatever they want at any time and the mayor will support them, even if the people object.

Even though the project will make it easy to find the cheapest parking near London City Airport offers, people are generally unhappy as the expansion will bring noise pollution to Thamesmead and Greenwich.

Mr Haughton went on to make reference to a letter he got from an elderly retiree living in Thamesmead, who expressed her concerns about the increasing number of planes making noise over her house.

The pensioner wrote: "In spite of the double-glazing, one can easily wave at the passengers as the planes are flying so close to the ground.

Mr Haughton said: "We are okay with Sadiq Khan supporting the Airport. But we wish he had spoken with the campaigners or the residents about the issue"

"This shows that the opinions of the residents do not matter to him. That is a trait not found in a mayor standing for the people - he is representing businesses and this is quite disappointing.

On Tuesday, the 17th of May, there will be an inquiry into the proposed move to purchase land, the results of which will be forwarded to the secretary of state for transport.

Those looking to get the cheapest parking near London City Airport offers can only hope the project sees the light of day.
