Godfrey Dawkins is a successful career coach living and working in Arizona. Though his present success is impressive, having helped more than 4,000 clients in a decade, Godfrey Dawkins wasn’t always happy or thriving. In 2004, with the support of his wife, Dawkins pursued certification as a career coach because he was unhappy with his present profession as a therapist. Had he not done this, he might still be unhappy and, as a result, unsuccessful.

If you would like to ensure that you achieve a similar level of career success, consider practices like those below…

  • Reflect on the Past – Reflecting on where you have succeeded and failed in your life can teach you a lot about succeeding in your career. For example, if you often fail because you get sidetracked, you know to implement measures to keep you on track. Likewise, if you succeed most commonly when you work under pressure, you know to set tight deadlines to keep yourself moving.
  • Research the Job Market – Before you give a plan your all, you need to stop and make sure that it can succeed. This means researching the current job market to ensure that there is room for growth in your field. If you see that your field is heading for extinction, it might be a good idea to switch focus.
  • Make a Goal List – After reflecting on the past and ensuring you’re in the right field, make a list of goals. If you need additional education, it should be at the top of this list. Other considerations include networking, transition preparation, exit planning and more.
  • Create a Marketing Plan – Marketing yourself or a new endeavor is key. The more you market, the more exposure you’ll earn, meaning your chances of success will also increase. Business cards, resumes, social media accounts, websites and even physical ads can help you market almost anything you’re doing.
  • Network – Now is always the time to increase the size of your network. Whether you’re networking through LinkedIn, at career conferences or at local events, networking is essential. Get to know other professionals, make connections and maintain communication. When the time comes to find an investor or a trusted ally, you’ll have everything (or everyone) that you need at your fingertips.

Career coaches like Godfrey Dawkins can help you with practices like those above and many others to ensure that you find the job of your dreams. If coaches like Dawkins require support to succeed, it is logical to assume that almost everyone can benefit from something similar.
