Godfrey Dawkins - Job Interview Tips
Posted: Jul 07, 2016
As part of his work as a career coach, Godfrey Dawkins works closely with clients to prepare them for everything that is involved with making a career transition. For many, the most intimidating part of this is having to deal with job interviews for roles that they may have little experience in. While he provides personalized advice to his clients, based on their situations and the types of jobs they are applying for, he also notes that there are a number of pointers that will prove useful in any job interview situation.
Research The Company
Upon receiving word that you have an interview scheduled, the very first thing that you should do is learn as much as possible about the company you are applying for. This is crucial as it is likely that you will face questions about what you already know about the company and the role you are expected to take on. A lack of research shows that you don’t care about the role, which is often enough to make employers pass you over, regardless of your skills.
Dress To Impress
It is also important that you understand the type of job role that you are applying for and dress appropriately during the interview. For example, those applying for office-based positions should make it a point to be well-groomed and wear suitable clothing for the interview. First impressions count for a lot and you may put your potential employer off if you treat the interview process too casually.
Be Positive
While it is important that you are able to identify areas where you are a little weak, as you must show the capacity for self-reflection and a desire to improve, the tone of your answers should always be positive. Accentuate the skills that you have and how they will apply to the role, in addition to thinking of ways to turn any negatives, such as a lack of experience, into positives.
Arrive Early
Godfrey Dawkins points out that punctuality is extremely important to most employers, so you should make it a point to turn up to your interview early. Not only does this show a willingness to commit to the role, but it also gives you time to relax and prepare prior to the interview taking place. Ideally, you should also wake up in plenty of time to enjoy a good breakfast and ensure that you are relaxed before you even set out for the interview.
