Advantages of Peer to Peer SCCM

Who is responsible for operating system update in your company? When there are many branch offices and agencies which are connected via very slow WAN connexion, the complexity is further increased. If the plan is to perform native SCCM for operating system migration then each network subnet would require PXE server. Otherwise, the network manager would need to create DHCP scope options and configure the routers newly. This is clearly not a feasible solution as the network team will take a very long time to reconfigure each router. Forgetting the complexity of setting up a PXE server, copying gigabytes of boot images and user data over the WAN would be nearly impossible. While using physical storage like USB drives to copy user data is an option, carrying them to different agencies would be difficult and a whole lot of administrative approvals would be needed.

SCCM Peer to Peer is an innovative solution which uses SCCM ConfigMgr extension of popular applications like Adaptive One site. Peer to peer SCCM removes the need to creating PXE servers in each sub node of the network. There would be no need of reconfiguring the routers either. This is a much better solution.

We can enable PXE server on every network sub node without actually creating PXE servers everywhere. There is no need to reconfigure routers nor there need any of DHCP configuration. Any client version operating system of Windows can act as a PXE server. There is no need of Windows server version even. The software itself will elect one machine per node to act as a PXE server. In fact, network administrators can actually select which machine to work as a PXE server.

However, this doesn't impact the performance or speed of upgrade for any target machines. When multiple machines are getting upgraded, they get their source data of OS image from a different computer on the subnet. The load balancing algorithm maintains perfect balance for the target machine as well as the source machine.

One can actually ‘pre-stage’ the whole content as well, which is actually a great advantage. This way the task sequences of any remote system can easily be queued. Creation of virtual SMP is another great advantage. There are many blogs where one can learn about this technique.

If you want really quick operating system upgrade and migration, these features will work in your favour. One can easily upgrade dozens of machines at one go using SCCM ConfigMgr.
