Pashmina is a fine type of cashmere wool and it was first woven in the city of Kashmir. The name is from Persian origin and it means ‘made from wool’. The price of a pashmina shawl ranges from a few thousands to over a few lakhs of rupees. A 100% cashmere pashmina would be the costliest, whereas a shawl made of merino wool, which is close to the feel of pashmina would be a bit cheaper.

Pashmina wool comes from a special breed of goat which is found on the high altitudes of the Himalayas. It is hand spun and the wool keeps you really warm, while other shawls are made from silk, wool which is not as warm as pashmina.

Genuine Pashmina shawls are difficult to locate. Owning a Pashmina is generally considered to be a luxury. It would be cheaper to buy shawls or pashmina stoles directly from the weaver, however, for the quality part, you will need to be a good judge of that yourself and will have to rely on the knowledge and experience in addition to the trust and confidence with the seller. You will be better off buying genuine stuff from big brand names as they are more concerned about their reputation and would procure their merchandise from tested and reliable sources. One might have to even travel as far as the Jammu & Kashmir area to shop for pashmina shawls.
