Important Things you need to start your Own Auto Repair Shop
Posted: Jun 27, 2016
Young mechanics graduates tend to land themselves a first job in an auto repair shop. However, those with entrepreneurial mindset decides to go a bit further by setting up their own business. Although it should be kept in mind that setting up your own shop requires more than simply fixing cars. You need to have practical business and management knowledge along with start-up costs. Does not matter either you opt for an independent business or look for a franchise to purchase, there are some considerations you need to take care of in order to establish a well-run auto shop.
1.Purchasing the property
Obviously finding a nice location comes first. Choosing areas with heavy traffic like highways or main city roads are the most potential locations for any auto shop. You need a location where your shop can be clearly visible with easy access to maximum of drivers. But first see if the property you have spotted lies within your budget range. The more the city midst location, more expensive will be the property. Buying a new property for business concerns will require a thick amount to run out of your pocket. You can always get a loan from a bank. But be sure to devise and prepare a professional and detailed business plan outlining the nature and goals of your business, start-up costs and advertising expenses.
2.Specializations in services
A countless number of garages could be found in the market offering services of general repairs and maintenance. But it requires some specialized skill set and hands to offer unique services not found commonly like collision repairs, detailing, etc. As an eco-friendly vehicle is primarily preferred in today’s fast traffic, you can always make some additional profit by specializing in hybrid or plug-in vehicles.
3.Hire the correct employees
Finding an experienced employee is a daunting and time consuming task. On the other hand, you may get loads of fresh graduates from a nearby mechanic college which is obviously not the correct option either as they all will be inexperienced. You need to find a perfect balance between experienced and young and novice employee that fits within your salaries budget. One best strategy is to initiate apprenticeship where you pay the employee for a period of time. Upon completion of apprenticeship period, it is assumed that the employee will continue to work for you, hence, becoming one of your most skilled and trusted employee.
4.Effective marketing
Great marketing and advertising efforts will make new customers come to your auto repair shop, but fulfilling the promises in your mission statement will retain them for a long term. Go for online advertising by creating your business website and marketing it through social media platforms. Create a value of guarantee in your commitments, for example, a guaranteed free brakes repair if they wear out after a particular time period. Guaranteeing allows customers to trust that you know your job and creates a secure relationship. Effective marketing also involves creating an ethics statement for your customers. That statement should contain all the relevant information like your specific duties and services, conformation to established industry standards, different costs throughout the repairing and maintenance process, etc.
