Various Advantages & Applications Of Heavy Copper PCB
Posted: Jul 06, 2016
There has been a growing trend in the number of power electronics products, PCB industry is focusing in the advantages of heavy copper. PCB or Printed Circuit Board is very well known in the electric department everywhere but these days people prefer a specific quality of PCB which is Heavy Copper PCB. It is manufactured using combination of copper etching and plating processes. The circuits used in the process are layered as thin sheets of copper foil.
Advantages:
- Plating technology in heavy copper allowed a combination of plating and etching which causes in straight sidewalls and negligible undercut.
- The heavy copper plating generates high-current circuits and control circuits that observes the highly dense and simple beard structure.
- This enables the board fabricator to increase the amount of copper thickness in plated holes and via sidewalls.
- The mix of heavy copper results on a single board called PowerLink.
- The heavy copper in the PCB also helps in connecting to the standard circuits.
- This reduces layer count, low impedance power distribution, smaller footprints and potential cost savings.
- For construction purposes, it increases the endurance to thermal strains.
- It has increased current carrying capacity.
- Heavy copper plating carries higher current through the board and helps to transfer heat to external heatsink.
Heavy copper PCB and extreme copper PCB designs are known for their maximum reliability. This PCB can be used with exotic materials without any circuit failure. The circuits are then etched to remove unwanted copper, next it is plated to add copper thickness to planes, traces, pads and plated-through-holes. These circuit layers are laminated using an epoxy-based substrate, such as FR4 or polyimide.
Applicable In Various Industries:
- Welding Equipment
- Power Supplies
- Solar Panel Manufacturers
- Automotive
- Power Converters
Printed circuit boards are either double-sided or multilayer typically. They are on-board high power density planar transformers. Heavy copper PCB is used for high power distribution boards, heat dissipation, planar transformers and power converters. It is efficient to save as much electricity possible and heavy copper circuit works effectively when they are designed correctly.
While heat is required to melt the squeeze out air pressure and cure the thermosetting prepreg adhesive which holds the multilayer PCB together. The detailing of the design ensures apt layering in every section to the required drilled holes. A step wrong or incorrect detailing can come across as the deformation stress produced by the heat and pressure.
Since, these Heavy copper PCB are made using specialized etching and plating techniques. It is formed entirely by etching thick copper clad laminated board material and you can even find traces of uneven sidewalls and unacceptable undercutting in PCB. The heavy coppers are seamlessly connected to standard circuits and it can be placed with minimal restriction provided by the designer.
