Mehrangarh Fort: A Celebrated Landmark in the Beautiful City of Jodhpur
Posted: Jul 06, 2016
Jodhpur is a fascinating city that shows its culture & modernity through its two parts known as old city and new city. Jodhpur, also known popularly as the 'Sun City', was built somewhere in the middle of the 15th century by Rao Jodha (a Rajput of the Rathore clan). The old city is segregated from the new city through a surrounding 10 km high wall that controls the entrance to the old city through eight massive gates. The magnificent Mehrangarh Fort lies within the old city on the top of a hill known as Bhaurcheeria. This captivating fort which is one of the most visited forts in India is covered in our hidden treasures of Rajasthan holiday tour package.
Mehrangarh Fort stands tall on the Bhaurcheeria hill at a height of 122 metres above the old city. The view of the old city from the fort is simply scintillating and the city appears to be painted in blue and yellow. There is a long curved road that connects the fort from the main part of the old city. The fort appears to be impenetrable with its 36 metre high wall and stretches over 5 km as it commands admiration from one and all. Mesmerised by the Mehrangarh Fort, Rudyard Kipling (a well-known English writer from the time of British Raj) said, "a palace that might have been built by Titans and colored by the morning sun". In fact, in 2007, Time magazine chose this fort as the ‘The Best Fortress in Asia’ which corroborated its awe-inspiring architecture.
There are many riveting temples, courtyards, garden, artefacts, and palaces within the fort. There are number of captivating places within the Mehrangarh Fort that must be visited such as Mehrangarh museum, Moti Mahal, Sheesha Mahal, Sileh Khana, Phool Mahal, and Daulat Khana. Out of these places, Moti Mahal often enchants visitors with its architectural design and enormity. It was used for administrative purposes by many generations of Rathore rulers. Sheesha Mahal, which literally translates as Glass Palace, is known for its intricate mirror work that has religious connotations. Over the centuries, this fort has been influenced by various styles of art & architecture brought by various rulers to the state such as Rajputs, Mughals, and Europeans as well. If you are visiting Jodhpur, then make sure to visit this beautiful fort.
