Not from what Chicago use to be thought of in the past, it is no considered to have just as sophisticated as dining in New York, San Francisco, and other cosmopolitan cities.

Even if your plan is to check out the latest restaurants with the most hype, there are still come classics that should not be missed like the forever known deep-dish pizza which was invented here in the 1940s.  Gino's East and other Chicago pizzerias continue to draw big crowds.  Chicago is also still the place to go for a juicy steak.  Formerly, Chicago's highest grossing restaurant has been Gibson's Steakhouse, a dark den of cigars, fine red wine and enormous steaks. Not that this is the only restaurant to serve up perfect cuts of beef.

Billy Goat TavernChicago is much more than pizza and steak.  You can find everything from meccas like Charlie Trotter's to basement-level dives to the Billy Goat Tavern.  If you are looking for something a little more diverse, the Mexican restaurant, Frontera Grill, doesn`t get much more Mexican that it, where the museum-quality Mexican art completes an atmosphere that matches the level of the fare to be expected.  Or Arun's offers tasteful Thai food and desserts that won`t be found anywhere than Thailand.

To experience a jaw dropping view while you eat, stroll over to The Hancock Observatory and view Chicago from its observation deck.  For something delectable in the middle of the day, try the Signature Room at the 95th that offers a delicious lunch buffet. On a clear day, which doesn`t always happens here, you will have the opportunity to see 50 miles and part of three surrounding states:  Michigan, Indiana, and Wisconsin.

Since the 1920s, Margie's Candies has been serving up the best ice cream in town.  The homemade hot fudge, real butterscotch and caramel are something that cannot be turned down.  The place is frozen in time and is stuffed with kitschy dolls, boxes of homemade candy, stuffed animals and news clippings from through the years.

You may surprised to see this in a place with the type of weather that it can have but outdoor dining in Greektown, makes for a comfortable, fun destination for families and large groups.  At Pegasus, a rooftop garden sets the mood for the panoramic view of the Chicago skyline.

Best Burger: The hamburger at Mike Ditka's Restaurant tastes more like chopped steak and can easily feed two. Take your kids to the main dining room, though, because the bar vicinity tends to get a little foggy with cigar smoke.

Any native person from Chicago will list Carson's as a huge favorite.  For only $20, you will live stuffed from eating your full slab of baby-back ribs, accompanied by a bowl of Carson's to die for coleslaw and a choice of potatoes.

Veggie lovers will be delighted with the twist of fine dining served up at Green Zebra.  The restaurant features plates of veggie specialties, such as fennel risotto cake with a syrah reduction, and Hawaiian heart of palm with Kaffir lime and Thai basil chile.
