IBPS Clerk Exam syllabus and tips for preparation

IBPS Clerk Exam, conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) selects eligible candidates for clerical positions in nearly 22 Public Sector Banks (PSUs). Since the clerical post is the first entry point for anyone wishing to become a banker, young graduates show a keen interest in the exam. Earlier, PSUs themselves conducted the exam for clerical vacancies but in 2011, a Common Written Examination (CWE) to fill clerical cadre in all PSUs was introduced by IBPS and since then, this process is only being followed.
This year too, IBPS is conducting CWE for recruitment of aspirants for clerical positions and for the same, IBPS Notification 2016-2017 has been announced.

Exam pattern for IBPS Clerk Preliminary Exam
IBPS Clerk Preliminary Exam focuses on three subjects i.e., Reasoning Ability, Quantitative Aptitude and English Language and those who clear in it, qualify for the Main Exam.

Exam pattern for IBPS Clerk Main Exam
Basically, the Main Exam consists of 40 Objective type questions from each of the five sections, namely, Reasoning, English Language, Numerical Ability, General Awareness and Computer Knowledge, making the total to 200 questions. The time duration is two hours and negative marking is also applicable with the deduction of 0.25 marks for every wrong answer.

Syllabus for IBPS Clerk Main Exam
Reasoning: All questions in this section are based on verbal and non-verbal reasoning. The topics covered in the section include number series, blood relations, mirror images, time series, word formations etc. In order to score well, aspirants need to practice different types of question on the various topics.
English Language: This section includes comprehensions; spotting errors in sentences, fill in the blanks, synonyms, antonyms, improving sentences, phrases and idioms etc. In order to score well, aspirants need to go through a grammar book to brush up their basic grammar skills and practice with mock tests.
Numerical Ability: This section majorly covers topics like profit and loss, time and distance, number system, data interpretation, number series etc. For scoring well in this subject, candidates need to practice as many sums as possible and learn smart tricks and shortcuts to solve the problem accurately with less time.
General Awareness: Nearly 40 percent of the questions in this subject revolve around banking and financial industry and 60 percent questions are based on current affairs covering topics like politics, economy, sports, art, awards, etc. In order to score well, candidates should read newspapers and magazines regularly. They need to keep themselves abreast with the latest happenings at the national and International level and concentrate on the updated banking policies and regulations.
Computer Awareness: This section covers two topics i.e., hardware and software. To score well, candidates need to have basic computer knowledge and know about MS Office, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Windows, and the Internet. To prepare for this section, aspirants need to refer to basic computer books and know basic computer operations to understand and remember them better.
