Tibet is the highest plateau land in the world and is one of the most preferred tourist destinations for its mystic and lovely atmosphere. While you can take the Beijing to Lhasa train or the Shanghai to Tibet route to reach Tibet, it is but natural for you to be concerned about high altitude sickness. There are people who feel that taking the Chengdu to Lhasa train will help you get used to the altitude gradually. The fact is that even if you take the Chengdu to Lhasa route you will feel a little uncomfortable for at least some time. Hence it is a good idea to be prepared for this kind of travel sickness as irrespective of how you reach Tibet, you might be afflicted with this kind of high altitude sickness. You should consult your travel agent about the precautions you need to take before you get your Tibet permit or Tibet visa. This can be managed and prevented if you follow a few steps. Most tourists get used to the altitude in a day or two, so there is no cause of great concern.

Before you get your Tibet Visa it is recommended that you understand what travel sickness is all about and what causes it. While mountain scenes in Tibet can be breathtaking, as you go up the pressure decreases and every breath you take will contain less air/oxygen. So the body gets lesser oxygen and the body takes time to get used to taking more breaths to get the required amount of oxygen. It does not matter if you are fit, young and healthy; you might still get high altitude sickness. It affects, young and old, male and female in a similar manner. The best way to prevent this sickness is to ascend slowly, which is why many people recommend the Beijing to Lhasa train route instead of flying. If you cannot avoid a slow ascend, then know the symptoms so that you can prevent life threatening conditions. To begin with drink a good amount of liquids, exercise moderately and eat small meals that is low in fat but high in carbohydrates. Avoid narcotic pain killers, sleeping pills and alcohol totally.

The symptoms of this kind of high altitude sickness are many including nausea, dizziness, insomnia, headaches, bloody nose, weakness, loss of appetite, confusion and even staggering. Decreasing salt in your intake consult a doctor, if you feel you cannot handle it. The doctor might advise you to descend quickly if you are very sick and unable to handle the high altitude. You can also take other steps such as not getting a cold before you travel, getting a good night’s sleep the night before, taking it easy on the day you arrive by the Chengdu to Lhasa train or by any other means and avoiding sedatives will also help a great deal.
