Like many other major Indian cities, Hyderabad also has extensive local bus service connecting various places in and around the city. Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) is responsible for running these buses, between specified locations, helping thousands of commuters everyday travel between different destinations. The city has two major bus stations – Mahatma Gandhi or Imlibun (MGBS) and Jubilee bus station (JBS) that are conveniently located in Hyderabad and Secunderabad areas. The public transport in Hyderabad is one of the major services as it has thousands of buses that runs inside the city as well as to many south Indian cities and rural areas.

Several types of bus services

TSRTC has several types of bus services such as ordinary, metro, pushpak, sheetal etc that differ in price and comfort. Some buses are designed to provide premium quality high end service with rich interiors and AC facility, while others are meant for regular passengers with ordinary comforts. People who commute everyday can take monthly or quarterly bus pass so that they can travel at a lesser price, instead of paying money for everyday commute which adds up to higher amount. The monthly bus pass amount starts at minimum Rs 770/- for ordinary service and may extend to Rs 2000/- depending on the type of bus that you have chosen to travel. There are also special passes available for students, disabled persons and government employees at special discounted prices. People with ordinary bus passes can also travel in higher service types such as Metro Deluxe or Metro Luxury by paying the extra amount in the form of combination ticket.

Frequency and convenience

Hyderabad has very large bus network, connecting almost all parts of the city including the five zones north, east, south, west and central. It has thousands of bus routes connecting various places from city center to remote areas outside the urban limits. The frequency of service has further improved in the last ten years because of technology boom as city infrastructure has extensively increased in all directions. Everyday, we see large number of commuters taking public transport traveling in all routes, sometimes more than 20 to 30 kms to reach their destinations. There are some high frequency bus service routes such as Kukatpally, Banjara Hills, Punjagutta, Koti, Secunderabad etc through which one can find hundreds of buses passing through them everyday.

Traffic concerns

People who are really concerned about speed of transit should take bus service that travels through less congested places like highways and outer ring roads. There is also a little inconvenience to the public right now due to metro rail construction work going on in major routes. However, the traffic problem is expected to subside once the metro project gets fully implemented in all areas of the city. Other than the traffic concerns, the bus service in Hyderabad is more convenient to travel around the city than any other means of transport.
