UPS batteries play a vital role in perfect operation of the uninterruptible power supply units and the continuity of protected loads. To examine the working condition and charging level of the UPS batteries, it needs to go through intrinsic routine checks and maintenance. The ability of the UPS battery to hold its charge is essential for correct performance and if maintained properly, the batteries remain operational for longer time.

The modern UPS battery is a sealed lead-acid system that can offer a five to 10-year design life. It has a typical feature of built in automatic testing that can be scheduled for every 24 hours. Temperature control is a vital aspect of UPS battery and for proper functioning it needs to have an ambient temperature. The operational efficiency of the battery diminishes with its age, state and environment. All the UPS batteries should be checked and tested on a regular basis to analyze about corrosion, discharge and wear.

To preserve the longevity of UPS batteries, the ideal surrounding temperature should remain between 20-25 °C. For such reasons, a UPS and battery set often comprises of an effective cooling system, as it serves as a temperature regulator. The onsite testing of the batteries is generally done by authorized and qualified personnel. They conduct periodic inspection of electrolyte and battery plates. Regular maintenance is pivotal for longer battery life. With proper understanding of battery care principles, the optimum performance and service life of the batteries gets enhanced.

Different methods of UPS battery testing:

There are variant advanced methodologies that technicians use to efficiently test the batteries:

Automatic battery testing - Most of the uninterruptible power supplies are designed to test their batteries every 24 hours and the system emits an audible alarm as soon as it comes across any battery fault.

Load bank discharge testing - Another accurate and reliable way to test batteries or battery sets is to use a load bank. It is helpful in analyzing the discharge performance of the battery.

Individual cell testing - For large battery sets, individual block testing is much more reliable and the technicians need to make a routine maintenance visit. They perform the visual inspection to check that battery casings are not damaged or showing signs of aging.

Electro-chemical testing - In the following process, measurement of the frequency response to voltage and current signals are noted down. The non-invasive method utilizes the principle of Frequency Response Analysis (FRA).
