When you are trying to buy the right kind of boat, you will realize that there are three types of engines. These are the inboard, outboard and the inboard outboard (IO). You may already have an idea of one or the other and which of these is the better one. The choice that you make will be a matter of preference as well as what you intend to do with the boat.

Before you make the decision, you need to start by assessing the plans that you have for the boat and the knowledge that you have for each type of engine. After this, you can decide on the type of engine that is best suited for you.

Inboards

In an inboard, a separate rudder is used to steer the boat. These motors are popular for the slalom skiers as their center of gravity is usually low producing smaller wake. When they are used in vessels that are heavier, they will need to have a motor with a bigger weight and size and this may not be the right choice for mounting at the end of the aft end. In boards have a few cons. However, most of the boat owners overlook the key features. While these will require some huge boxes to be placed in the boat’s middle to keep their engine, they are usually quieter as compared to the outboards. This makes them to be a great choice for the purpose of entertainment.

These are more costly as compared to the outboards and it can be more difficult to load them onto trailers since they have been modeled on the car engines. Inboards usually have more torque, better horsepower and are fuel efficient. Due to their transmission which is inside, they use more cabin space. However, their main cons are that that they can pose a potential for a fire hazard.

Outboards

You may have come across pictures of outboards from family and friend. These are options that are quite popular with boat enthusiasts. Most boaties find the mounting position that is easily accessible of an outboard to be more appealing as it is possible to get the engine completely out of water when not using it. This is usually a great advantage for the purposes of storage during winter or even when the boat is docking as the engine will not have to sit idly inside the water where the water inhabitants are attaching themselves to propellers or not.

Incase there will be a need for changing the motor to a model that is larger; it can be a cinch to change the engine of the outboard. It is also easier to service the outboard engine and this makes them reliable. One of their drawbacks is that to get the power in the I/O has, you might require several outboards.
