Microsoft Hyper-V is a hypervisor which runs multiple operating system (virtual machines) on a single host. Hyper-V stores its virtual machine in Virtual Hard Disk (VHD), which get stored in physical disk. Basically, it is a part of Windows Server 2008, but is designed in such a manner that it is compatible with Windows 8 operating system. Moreover, it provide an option to create a new virtual machine without need of any third party software. This blog will guide on how to create VHD in Hyper-v.

NOTE: This feature is not available on Windows 7, and will only work with Professional or Enterprise versions of Windows 8, 8.1, or 10. In addition, it requires CPU with support of hardware virtualization like Intel VT or AMD-V (Established in most of the modern CPUs)

Steps to Create VHD in Hyper-V

1. Launch Hyper-V Manager on your machine2. From right hand side of the window pane, click on New>> Virtual Machine

3. A New Virtual Machine Wizard will display in front of you. In this window, first you will have to mention the name of new virtual machine and then, select the location where you want to store that new machine. Click on Next button to continue

4. Specify the amount of memory in Startup memory text box, which you want to allocate to new virtual machine(in MB). Click on Next

5. Click on drag-down button of Connection, select any one option as per your requirement and then click on Next. Here, we have selected virtual switch option

6. Another step is to Connect Virtual Hard Disk and this comprises of three options:Create a Virtual hard disk: For creating a dynamically expanding VHDXUse an existing VHD: For attaching an existing VHD (either VHD or VHDX)Attach a virtual hard disk later: For skipping this connection step

7. After selecting any one option for connection, click on Next button8. Next step is to select the installation procedure in order to create VHD in Hyper V & then click on Next button. You can select any one of the four options to do so:Install an operating system laterInstall an operating system from a boot CD/DVDInstall an OS from a boot floppy diskInstall an OS from a network based installation serverHere, we are creating virtual machine from.iso image of Linux OS

9. Now a complete summary report will appear in front of you. Once take an overview of all the summary displaying on wizard and then click on Finish button. However, if you require some changes to be performed, then click on Previous button.

After successful completion of creation procedure, this new virtual machine name will appear in front of you, on Hyper-V Manager window. In order to open this machine, right-click on the name of new virtual machine and click on Start option

Conclusion

Virtualization is now taking the computer environment to next level with all its amazing features. Moreover, hyper-V has many benefits like require less hardware resources, minimized amount of space, flexibility, etc. One can not only create VHD in Hyper-V, but can also delete and modify the existing virtual machines.
