The One designing helps to equalize the yachts and emphasis on the skill of the competitors. This standard measure is highly used in sailboat racing. The judgment of all the races under One design for all the competitors is based on simple fact ‘first to the finish’ with a single start time.

Being rigid on the one design fleet specification, it minimizes design experimentation and lowers down the ownership cost. This is an important feature of equalizing the design of the equipment for which they were competing.

Methods of sailing competition

Primarily there are 2 methods in sailboat racing -

1. One-design
2. Handicap

The class of racing consisting of just one model or design of sailboat is called One-design. It means the boat which finishes first wins the race in One-design racing.

The second system is Handicap racing, where the winner is determined by the subtraction or additions from the finishing times based on designing factors and mathematical formulas. It is a tedious method of judgment.

Just like One-designing, there are few more categories in racing. Under one design fleet, boats are virtually identical except in details whereas the Formula set up allows the boats to differ design while keeping few important specifications the same. The popularity of one-design fleet came with a boom in the 1970s with FRP and mold building technology. Yacht owners are welcome to join the Yachts fleet to charter their yachts.

Building fleet - For fleet building the classes should develop good, innovative ideas to enhance the natural flow and growth. The class leaders can influence the fleet building process on a huge level in several ways:

1. Strong communication – the web, newsletter, listers/mail
2. Coordinating schedule, planning regatta
3. Membership of collections, finances & reports of how you’re doing i.e. keeping track of their membership numbers with their competitors.
4. Relations build up, rules revision.

What Fleets Need to Grow?

1. The vital components of a successful Fleet are the crew members like Fleet Captain, Treasurer, Secretary and expert officers.
2. Staff recruited for collecting dues of the members through their e-mail and addresses.
3. Both social and competitive activities should be organized by you along with racing.
