Get Out and About on a Holiday Walking in Croatia
Posted: Jan 10, 2014
Croatia is a wonderful country for holidays on foot and walking in Croatia is a great way to see this very special place. The country is beautiful in every way - with spectacular countryside, stunning cities, charming villages and hospitable locals. Located in the southeast of Europe, the country boasts a beautiful coastline, rugged and wild, and some magnificent mountains that tower above idyllic islands and a crystal clear sea. There are many incredible nature parks, with Paklenica and Plitvice being very popular areas for walking in Croatia.
Holidays walking in Croatia have myriad scope, and whether you want long day hikes up the steep mountain trails or shorter strolls along the coast, there will be an itinerary to suit.
The Natural Geography
Lying on the other side of the Adriatic Sea from Italy, the country borders with Slovenia, Hungary, Bosnia, Herzegovina and Montenegro and, in general, the terrain is varied. It is made up primarily of flat plains and rolling hills in the north and more dramatic mountains, known as the Dinaric Alps, which line the entire coast. Some of these mountains are covered in dense forest, which is home to some diverse and interesting wildlife. The topography is made up of some impressive landforms, including spectacular caves - the deepest ones being found around the Velebit and Biolovo mountains. Some of these caves can be reached on foot, and if you are on holiday walking in Croatia, you may find yourself visiting one.
The capital, Dubrovnik, sits on the rocky coast that stretches north to Istria in the west. There are many islands belonging to the country that sit close to the coast and make great places to explore on foot. In fact there are over one thousand islands in total, making this the second largest archipelago, after Greece, in the Mediterranean. There are only 36 of these islands that are inhabited, however, but that still leaves plenty of scope for exploration.
The climate here is ideal for hiking and the season is long, stretching from early spring to late autumn. Along the Dalmatian coast and on the islands, the Mediterranean climate dominates and offers mild winters and long, hot summers. The islands are generally dry and in the summer make a pleasant place for outdoor pursuits. Much of the countryside remains untouched and quiet and there are some wonderful paths and trails to be explored.
