Most parents find that choosing a kindergarten in Singapore is a very important decision, as it is the first time that their children go into an academic environment. Many investigations show that if you choose the right school for your child, he or she will flourish. But if you pick out the wrong one, you may scar your child for life. Because of this, it is essential to know how to choose a kindergarten in Singapore. In fact, the choice can be easier if you understand what to look for and what types of questions to ask.

Use the Internet to check different kindergartens in details. Visit the school’s websites and read parents’ unbiased reviews wherever available. Make sure that the websites are up-to-date, if it is not, it may indicate that the schools might not pay attention to your child either.

Visit different kindergartens during an open day. Most schools offer open days to parents just before enrollment time, and it’s a chance to visit the school. If the kindergarten you’re interested in doesn’t have an open day, you can ask the school if they can give you one.

Classroom Teachers matter. When you visit the school, it is totally appropriate to ask about the experience of the classroom teachers, for example, how long they have taught in the kindergarten and what their previous experience has been. In some situation you may even want to have a quick chat with the classroom teacher most likely to teach your child. But you should let the kindergarten know this request before the visit as it might impact on your visit time.

Also, ask the teachers what children learn every day. Actually, learning numbers, alphabet, science, frequent reading and computers should all be included in daily activities. There should also be a minimum of 1 hour for break and outdoor play whenever possible, which gives your child an opportunity to recharge.

Think about the future. Ask what kids will do in advanced grades, as this will be a glimpse into your child’s future. Ensure that the older children are adequately challenged, that future classrooms are teaching appropriate math and reading skills, and that both children and teachers are still happy.

Popular kindergartens will often develop wait-lists and therefore it is a good idea to register early once you have decided. Registration fees are payable but you are not contractually committed to the school and could always choose to send your child to another school. If you do not register, and leave your decision later you may find that you cannot get a place at your preferred kindergarten.
