Where to Begin

Feng Shui is a venerable art-form and a science that was developed well over 3,000 years ago in China. Feng represents the wind, and Shui stands for water. As a complex form of knowledge, it teaches how to balance the attributes of any indoor or outdoor space for the purpose of ongoing peace, harmony, health, joy, love, success and good fortune for the people who occupy any space, anywhere. For most people in Japan and China, as well as those who understand the origins of this discipline, wind and water are associated with a healthy being, so positive Feng Shui symbolized good fortune, while negative Feng Shui represented misfortune.

Although most people limit the application of Feng Shui to indoor spaces, for centuries it has been applied to architecture and landscaping to lend an auspicious quality to any piece of property. It even takes into account larger forces such as geography, weather patterns, longitude and latitude, and the migration of other living creatures. However, the subject of this article is beautifying the inside of a person’s home.

The Next Quantum Leap

So what kind of furniture does one get? And how much? And what color? What style? And where is it placed in a particular room? Do you get a matching set of bedroom furniture? Or should each piece have its own unique personality? What kind of carpeting should one install, conventional carpets with toxic off-gassing? Or recycled carpeting made from bottles? Or should you forego carpeting in a particular room, install stone tiles or wood flooring and then lay rugs down?

One question that Feng Shui can easily answer is the selective placement of furniture (as well as any other object) in any one room. Having a slightly or even a dramatically different color scheme for each room can lend a deeper sense of beauty to your home as a whole, as long as the rooms don’t look gaudy; however, some people prefer a little gaudiness, especially in basements, where that choice can add to the fun and pleasure of a game-room, for example.

Another essential question has to do with lighting, and there’s a big difference between table lamps/floor lamps or ceiling fixtures/wall fixtures. Depending on the style of lamps you choose, they usually provide a warmer atmosphere as well as an added element of color, where lamp-shades are concerned. Another lighting option, with a dual purpose, is a ceiling-fan, which usually works best in the kitchen, where the temperature is higher than other rooms due to the heat produced by cooking.

Although it’s usually important to have one person take on the role of a guiding force in relation to interior decorating, it’s still essential to get input from every family member or housemate. That way, no one feels left out or unappreciated or disrespected or unloved.

Integrate Your Walls with Floors & Ceilings

In addition to carefully chosen pictures, prints, plagues, and tapestries, a unique and tasteful choice to decorate your walls, in almost any room, are indoor water fountains and water sculptures. As a type of white sound (not noise), flowing water facilitates a relaxing environment. It also produces negative-ions that offer healthy benefits, such as putting moisture in the air and removing dust and other airborne pollutants. Wall fountains also add an aesthetic quality that enhances the ambiance in a room.
