The future of hydronic boilers will be linked with renewable energy source in the near future.

Long before when people had access to natural gas, oil, electricity, and long before that when there were central control heating systems, wood was the most commonly used heating fuel. In early days, wood – fired stove were the centerpiece of kitchens. A parlor stove or fireplace would provide the comfort, replaced by crude these days in family gathering rooms.

As fossil fuels and electricity have become available over the course of time, most people were persuaded to convert to modern means of central heating. The use of wood as a primary central heating fuel increasingly viewed traditional or limited to those who couldn’t afford central heating.

The oil embargo of 1970s, and the subsequent price shock of the petroleum prices, brought back the interest of wood fired hydronic boilers, becoming a substitute at that moment. Quite unfortunately the crisis didn’t last long but that didn’t eliminate the use of wood boilers. Most of the people adapted to the system of manually wood fired boiling systems.

New and Improved

Just as the solar thermal industry had its ups and downs over the few years, people’s interest in wood fired hydronic boilers had fluctuated with the price of conventional fuel? The increasing demand for boilers over the time has been there due to: less expensive than fuel, the priority to keep money spent on energy in local economies, and concern over climatic change. In short, wood boilers offer benefits which are favorable to building owners, environmentalists and politicians.

Still many people view the wood fired boilers as the crude, dirty and smoky pursuits of rural rednecks. The use of wood fire heaters using single stage combustion and, at times, anything that fits through the firebox door,

Today, residential and commercial sized boilers which are running on wood pellets can be operated automatically for weeks. Depending upon the climatic conditions, these wood boilers do not require two to three ash removals per heating season. The process is very simple as the boiler needs to be emptied in the trash or spreading it in the lawn to use it as a fertilizer.

Many of these modern wood pellet boilers have integrated web accessible controls that can run the boiler as well as peripheral devices such as mixing valves, circulators, and pellet transport systems. Owners can have full control over these devices with the help of smart phones or tablets.

Many manufacturers of wood heating devices, as well as trade associations, support the need for environmental regulations as well.
