McDonald’s arrives in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh
Posted: Oct 07, 2016
McDonald’s has arrived in Vijayawada. Vijayawada, located on the banks of the Krishna river in Andhra Pradesh, is perfectly poised between history and modernity. A place whose birth lies in an ancient legend involving Goddess Durga, is today a leading hub of educational institutions and has been recognised by the well-known industry-watch magazine, McKinsey Quarterly, as a "future global city".
With a GDP of $3 billion in 2010, estimated to grow to $17 billion by year 2025, Vijayawada has lived up to its reputation as "the business capital of Andhra Pradesh."
While not pursuing educational goals or business targets, the people of Vijayawada love to explore yet another feature of the city – food!
Of course, the city has plenty to offer in terms of spicy and tangy Andhra cuisine – from pulihara, tamarind rice spiced up with green and red chillies and accompanied by the hottest pickles you can find, to pessaratu, a dosa made using yellow lentils and served with tangy chutney. Indeed, the city is about relishing great food as well.
Andhra cuisine is incomplete without the mention of biryani. While there are different varieties of biryanis to be enjoyed in Andhra Pradesh, essentially it is rice cooked with whole spices, vegetables or meat, giving off incomparable aromas! Ulavacharu biryani, Avakai biryani, Red Chilli biryani, Ginger biryani, Mutton keema biryani, Prawn biryani and the all-time favourite Dum biryani are some of the biryanis you can find in the city.
Among curries, one can enjoy jackfruit curry, which is jackfruit cooked with various masalas and topped with cashewnuts. Then, there’s the eggplant curry, which makes for a perfect accompaniment to a rice dish. Being located not too far from the sea – the Bay of Bengal – one can relish various types of fish curries as well. The prawn curry, for instance, is spicy, and layered with delicious coconut and sesame.
The only way to soothe your taste-buds after such a fiery hot meal would be by downing a glass of buttermilk. NO wonder, curd rice remains a popular meal in these parts.
After all the spicy stuff, you would naturally be craving to have something sweet. The perfect sweet dish to have in Vijayawada would be boorelu, a rice flour dumpling which is stuffed with coconut and pulses.
Now, with the arrival of McDonald’s in the city, the city of businessmen, students and foodies has got yet another chance to eat out and pamper its taste-buds. The throbbing business hub has been seeing a flurry of corporate activity, and what better place to grab a bite than at an international restaurant like McDonald’s?
For a people used to hot and spicy food daily, McDonald’s too has on offer a menu that’s as hot and spicy as they would like it.
For vegetarians, there’s Masala Grill Veg, McSpicy Paneer, McSpicy Paneer Supreme and Big Spicy Paneer Wrap, to choose from. Then, for non-vegetarians, there’s Masala Grill Chicken, McSpicy Chicken, McSpicy Chicken Supreme, Double McSpicy Chicken and Big Spicy Chicken Wrap. Just in case there are those who still crave for something spicier and hotter, McDonald’s Vijayawada can serve its Extra Ketchup Chilli Sauce.
