Fog Lighting System – A Boon in Foggy Weather Condition
Posted: Oct 10, 2016
Fog lamps or fog lighting systems are installed in vehicles so that drivers are able to see the road clearly regardless of rain or fog. The fog lamps are angled and positioned in a way that drivers are able to see the surface of the road despite bad weather conditions. Using fog lamps in typical situations can improve visibility and prevent accidents.
When driving in tough weather conditions, it often becomes necessary to switch between high and low beams depending on the visibility. At the instant of switching over, there is a moment of obscured vision as the eyes adjust to the new lighting. However temporary, this can lead to potential problems. Fog lamps come in handy here as they cast a wider but shorter light beam. The high penetration but relatively low-intensity beams reduce the glare effect significantly and help the eyes to see the road without any problem.
Keeping your fog lights on along with your low beam lights has no real additional benefit. It is better to use fog lights with side marker lights and side lights. In such situations, you do not have to worry about the other drivers seeing you as there will be enough light for other vehicles to detect your presence from a long way off. With the high beam off and all the other lights on, the backscatter from the fog or snow is largely eliminated. It also eliminates the dazzling glare effect and enables you to clearly see what is in front of you.
The various benefits of fog lights are explained here for your reference.
- Visibility: The visibility ratio of fog lights depends on the condition, not of the lamps themselves, but that of the surroundings. In light foggy or snowy situations, low beam lamps provide good support but in harsher weather, they may be of less use to be effective. Plus, there is no need to turn on your headlights in such condition as that will only make the situation worse. Fog lights are designed to support you with the visibility.
- Safety: Improved visibility means increased safety and fog lights do just that. There are other car lighting accessories to aid the fog lights so that the driver and passengers can reach their destination safe and sound. Cars often break down during harsh weather, though modern technology has improved the odds significantly. LED emergency flashers can control the situation before it gets worse. In low visibility conditions, the driver can also use these LED flashers along with fog lights so that other vehicles can identify your vehicle and any chances of collision can be reduced significantly.
- Looks: Besides ensuring the visibility and safety, fog lights also enhance the look of your vehicle. Fog lights come in various shapes and designs depending on the vehicle, and almost all of them are sleek as well as practical. Fog lights that are designed to match the front grill and overall design of the vehicle are your best bet, but larger vehicles can often get away with something more bold and unique.
