Around 5 Million people develop Hernia each year but only 14 percent out of these receive corrective surgery.

Doctors believe that many people put off or avoid receiving treatment due to the fear of painful and lengthy recovery period. However, a new procedure, called as Laparoscopic repair has been evolved and is helping to slowly erase the painful stigma associated with traditional Hernia surgery.

What is a Hernia?

One of the most common forms of Hernia is Inguinal Hernia. This type of problem occurs when some part of the intestine slips through the torn or weakened section from the inner abdominal layer, forming a balloon like sac. Most of the hernias create a bulge in the nearby areas, which is easily visible in the abdominal, scrotum and groin area, causing pain and discomfort like vomiting, sharp abdominal pain and others while coughing, lifting objects or doing other activities. Other severe symptoms like vomiting or sharp abdominal pain can also mean that intestine is experiencing strangulation and need to receive medical attention.

Treatment options

In the traditional Hernia surgery, also called as Open Repair, small incision is made near the Hernia in the skin. The surgeon will then proceed to get closer to Hernia using mesh or stitches to sew the walls together. Most of the patients are capable of going home within few hours following the hernia operation in Mumbai. Strenuous activities and exercise is prohibited for up to 6 weeks to ensure that the patient’s abdominal walls are healed properly. Hernia recurrence rates for the patient receiving Open Repair Surgery is as low as one percent.

Laparoscopic surgery is one of the best hernia treatments in India which is performed using a small telescopic sized device called as Endoscope. This can be inserted through Belly Button via Incision. This endoscope features a small video camera. This camera allows the surgeon to perform the hernia surgery in India using a TV screen that lets them view the body of the patient in real time. The surgery is conducted by attaching a mesh patch to the weak area of the abdominal wall. This is then enclosed through sutures or staples.

Advantages of laparoscopic Repair
  • Due to less surgical intrusions to the body, laparoscopic repair tend to leave less scars on the body of the patient.

  • Patients receiving this kind of surgery report less post operative pain.

  • Furthermore, the wound infection, numbness and tingling in the groin and scrotum area are reported to be lesser amongst the laparoscopic patients as compared to open repairs.

  • The older aged men that used to be treated using open repair method have shown high recurrence of Hernia in their age group as compared to the latter ones.

  • Drawn out recovery period is very short.
