Cold may seem just another issue for adults but, kids are always at the delicate end. As they can catch hold of the bacteria quicker than adults and at the same time are not capable of self-help. Are we really making the preventive efforts? What can be done to ensure our kid’s safety?

What causes stuffy nose in kids and infants?

Stuffy nose in kids can be due to the following reasons :-

  • Dry Air
  • Dust, cigarette smoke and perfumes
  • Chronic illness like cold
What should be done to treat the kid's stuffy nose?

There is no need to run to the doctor if your child is down with stuffy nose. The baby can be treated at home too!

  • 1. Use saline water - Use saline water to moisten your baby’s nose. As the baby develops mucus in the nose, it becomes important to clear the congestion. Purchase saline water and insert 4-5 drops in each nostril. Use a bulb syringe to remove some mucus. The process can be repeated as often as you need, provided your baby is not getting fussy over it! Wash the bulb syringe with soap and water after each use. Once the mucus gets thin, the nose starts running and the collected cough comes out easily.
2. Cotton balls - Your baby can start developing sticky mucus around the nose which may irritate him. To clear it off, use a cotton ball dipped in warm water, gently clean the area around the nose, do not rub harshly as the baby’s skin may feel irritated.

  1. Moisture the air - The air should contain moisture to treat the stuffy nose quick, place a humidifier in your baby’s room and it will generate moisture in the air which helps in treating the stuffy nose quick, make sure you clean the machine regularly to avoid further hygiene issues. You can enjoy the same effect when sitting in a steam room
  2. Pat the back - Pat your baby’s back by lying him down, this helps in loosening the mucus and an easy flow of cough out of the body.

5. Avoid child surroundings - Avoid your child from being directly under the fan, let him be covered all the time, cover him with a blanket while sleeping. You should always keep a check on your baby’s vaccination, book health check-ups online for your kid and ensure the well-being.
