Amid the season of MBA entrance exams and aspirants trying hard to block a seat at one of the eminent B-schools in the country, it is important to know about all the exams before registering for them. The level of preparation one needs for an exam and the type of colleges accepting a particular exam are some of the factors that a management aspirant needs to consider.

Today, two of the most widely taken exams are Common Admission Test (CAT) and Common Management Admission Test (CMAT). CAT is a national level exam conducted by the IIMs as a pre-requisite for admission to the postgraduate and fellow programs offered by the apex B-schools. While, CMAT is conducted by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for admission to hundreds of B-schools across the 13 states in the country.

Earlier CMAT was conducted twice a year – in September and February, but from last year it is being conducted only once i.e. in the month of January.

When seeing the difference between and CAT and Cmat, one of the most distinct feature is the level of difficulty – CMAT is much easier than CAT. And, admission difficulty is also less in the case of CMAT. An aspirant may score 98 or 99 percentile and even then not get into one of the IIMs. But, on the other hand colleges that accept CMAT scores are much more liberal and one may have a plenty of options after obtaining a decent score.

The syllabus for both the exams is more or less the same. Those who are appearing for CAT 2016 may not need to separately prepare for CMAT 2017.

Those who want to take admission in a B-school and embark upon their journey of management studies can no longer apply for CAT 2016, its online registration closed in September. However, for CMAT the online registration window is still open and will close on 10th December, 2016.

All in all, aspirants need to gear up and prepare in a focused way for both the exams. Having a strategic preparation plan in place is crucial to excel exams like CMAT and CAT and one must not study just for the sake of it.
