Posted: Nov 26, 2016
Along with many other things, the internet has also revolutionised the telephony system as well. Many new directions of operations and services has opened up to the public and these services have improved the living standards of the public as well. Internet telephony is one of those and it uses the internet to provide telephone communications across the globe.
Internet telephony system utilises the internet protocol called VOIP to transmit packets of voice data over the internet. VOIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol and this simple system enables two people with computers and internet connections to talk to each other. Many software companies have developed software for this specific purpose. With these software, users can easily connect to and converse with each other. All they need are microphones and headphones.
A computer user can connect to any other computer user using this protocol. However, they both should be using the same software to find each other among millions of other users. Internet is nothing but computers from around the globe, connected to each other and transferring data. Information sharing has been very easy since the advent of internet. Internet protocols are set of rules, defined by governing bodies so that the computers can effectively connect with each other. These protocols are accepted by everybody and must be adhered to, to connect to and exchange data with each other.
Internet telephony is called IP telephony as well. Installation of a sound card is necessary in the computer to enable the computer to process the voice signal. However, nowadays, the computer motherboards come with existing sound cards. However, for better quality of sound, installing dedicated sound card is advisable.
Traffic load on the internet connection is also important in this regard. As voice signals are heavier than data signals like image or text, higher amount of data is transferred in real time. To accommodate this load of data, one should have a high speed internet connection. If using PC, a broadband connection of at least 128 KBPS speed is recommended for the users.
Nowadays, the smartphones are also capable of using these software and different companies have launched dedicated apps for this. If using the smartphone, 2G connection might prove insufficient for clear voice calls. 3G or 4G connections are advisable in this situation. The cost of internet telephony services is much lower when compared to the traditional ISDN dialling.
