And for the successful businessman who demands 5-star hospitality, gourmet food and luxury chocolate, a city break in Switzerland is an excellent choice.

The aim of this article is to introduce you to just a small sample of the amazing chocolate experiences waiting for you across Switzerland. We hope that it will turn out to be the start of an adventure as you explore the many different varieties of decadent Swiss chocolate.

Geneva

Geneva, as well as hosting the headquarters of the Red Cross and many other international organisations, is also home to some exquisite chocolate manufacturers.

Favarger – set in the village of Versoix, a 20-minute train ride from Geneva, are artisan chocolate makers Favarge. They’ve been producing chocolates for over seven generations and a guided tour of their factory (25 CHF), a chocolate workshop (75 CHF) or a chocolate tasting experience (15 CHF) are something not to be missed.

Philippe Pascoët, Chocolatier – This Maitre Chocolatier (Master Chocolate Maker) can be found at 12 Rue Saint Joseph, Carouge. It’s a small shop serving some of the most delicious and original chocolate creations you will ever experience.

Chocolatier Stettler – Located at 10 Rue de Berne, this is another taste experience not to be missed. These chocolatiers are especially famous for their traditional Pavés de Genève (‘Geneva paving stones’) which make the perfect present. If you take a guided tour (20 CHF) you get some "paving stones" as a gift at the end of the tour.

Luzern

Luzern (not to be confused with Lausanne) would make another excellent chocolate-orientated city break in Switzerland. We recommend starting your chocolate extravaganza with these three chocolate makers.

Max Chocolatier – even though a relative newcomer, having only opened their doors in 2009, they have fast established a reputation for some of the most delicious chocolate creations around. As well as buying some of their fine chocolates, you can also take part in a chocolate tasting or making workshop (prices vary according to the number of participants).

Swiss Chocolate Adventure – this isn’t a chocolate maker but rather a multi-media experience that harnesses sound, touch, smell and taste to explore the world of chocolate. It is located in the Transport Museum at Verkehrshaus, so get the S3 train, bus no. 6, 8 or 24 or take a water taxi to reach it. Entry is 15 CHF for adults and 9 CHF for kids.

Aeschbach – this company have been producing fine chocolates since 1972. Found in the Root District (just a 10-minute train ride from the city centre), this family-owned business also has a ChocoCafe, hosts chocolate-related events and offers chocolate experiences (15 CHF for adults, 8 CHF for children).

Lausanne

Durig Chocolatier – This popular chocolatier has opened another shop at rue Mercerie 3, not far from Lausanne’s historical centre and Place Palud. They offer a wide range of chocolate bars, truffles and chocolate specialties all made from the finest cocoa beans and 100% certified organic and fair trade chocolate, along with a myriad of other ingredients.

Basel

Beschle Chocolatier – has four shops around Lausanne: Aeschenvorstadt 56, Centralbahnstrasse 9, Streitgasse 5 and St. Jakobs-Strasse 25. Each location has a great selection of their fine chocolates and offers many other culinary delights to amaze your palate.

Zurich

Lindt Chocolate Experience

Getting to Your City Break

Most European airlines run regular services to Switzerland – call your travel agent to find out which airlines fly to from your nearest airport.
