Coughing is something which everyone goes through and in fact it is a reflex action to restrict the particles to enter into your lungs. Lungs are one of the vital organs of the body, which takes care of your respiration and provides oxygen to throughout the body. Without this respiratory system, the human body cannot survive, that’s why when your lungs are affected with an infection or irritation this can lead to continuous coughing. Broadly speaking, coughing can be categorized into two types one is acute cough and the other is the chronic cough and we are briefly going to discuss these two in this article.

Coughs are of various types namely acute, subacute and chronic based on the duration the cough lasts in the human body. An acute cough is usually caused by cold or other upper respiratory infections like pneumonia and it usually lasts for lesser than three weeks whereas the subacute cough is caused by the above mentioned scenarios but lasts from 3 to 8 weeks. The third type, a chronic cough lasts for more than 8 weeks and the common causes for these are asthma, gastroesophageal reflux disease and infections in upper airway path.

People suffering from tuberculosis also have chances of getting a cough that is chronic in nature mainly due to the former disease. These conditions can cause a lot of mucus to secrete on the air duct which is the main cause of irritation and same reason which causes the cough. Another cause would be asthma, which basically inflames and narrows down the airways in your throat and this can also lead to chronic cough as this is a type of allergy or irritation which can prolong for several weeks if not treated properly.

When you have asthma you will start facing other issues like irritation, sore throat and sometimes experience a mild case of bronchitis. This can lead to severe chronic cough which can prolong for months and the only way to treat this is to consult a doctor and follow the treatment procedure regularly as skipping the treatment of cycle can at times make the condition worse than it was before. A lot of people who have asthma can also face the condition of wheezing, a whistling sound that is created by air passing through narrowed pathways.

A lot these issues are caused mainly due to external factors like environmental like changing climate and air pollution, work style and work environment and life style choices such as smoking. Some start facing issues in the later part of their life when they start to get old and even if they don’t currently smoke their history of smoking will be the sole reason of their respiratory problems. The only way to avoid them is by adapting a healthy lifestyle and eating and exercising regularly.
