The Catacombs of Paris are known officially in French as the l'Ossuaire Municipal. This is an exciting and macabre attraction that will see you head right down underneath the surface of Paris, and few sights in the city are likely to make such an impression on you. What Are the Catacombs of Paris?

These opened in the 18th century, and they became popular with tourists in the 19th century. In fact, ever since 1874, the Catacombs have been open to the public.

Bodies were placed here due to the closure of graveyards, which at the time posed a health risk. Many famous people are buried here, including the writer Jean de La Fontaine, the painter Simon Vouet and the architect Claude Perrault. Many people were also buried here during the Revolution.
