Karakorum, also known as Kharkhorin or Kharkhorum, is situated in the central region of Mongolia and was the capital of the Mongol empire in the middle of the 13th century. It is famous because it was also the residence of the popular Mongolian emperor, Genghis Khan. The city was abandoned a few decades after the death of Genghis Khan. The ruins of Karakorum were discovered in 1889 by a Russian explorer.
