Anyone who’s just shifted from a gruelling office job as a subordinate to a demanding boss and exhausting work schedules would be relieved to become an independent entrepreneur. Delicious freedom awaits a self-employed professional, for there are no more irate bosses to handle, no more deadlines imposed by the management, no office politics, and no time wasted in commuting to and from the office! What could be better than a relaxed, convenient, work set-up right at home that lets you do your work at your own pace, right?

Wrong.

Just when you think that working from home on your start-up or freelance assignments is the best thing that could have happened to you, you realize things couldn’t get worse.

What could possibly go wrong?

1. You have no competition to keep you on your toes

You probably think it’s great to work independently because there’s no stress of having to outperform someone else, but the fact is that it makes you lazy and reticent. You find yourself procrastinating more than you ought to, and the sheer lack of healthy rivalry hits your performance graph.

2. Distractions galore

If you thought that working in a crowded, noisy office distracted you from work, then be prepared for the insane amounts of distraction you’ll face when you work from home. It isn’t easy to deal with nosy salesmen, crying toddlers, and family that takes your time for granted, simply because you work from home.

3. You are shut off from the world

This may seem like a good thing at first, but slowly, you start missing the hustle and bustle of office, the camaraderie and the comfort you shared with your colleagues, and how the tea/coffee breaks with friends at office were a lot more enjoyable than the tea time at home! On a more serious note, you fail to keep abreast of the latest happenings in your field of work, putting you at a disadvantage.

Co-working spaces— the growing trend among the self-employed?

With independent professionals and freelancers comprehending the losses they face when they work from home, are turning to co-working spaces as consolation.
