Colocation or Dedicated Hosting?

A colocation server is, also often referred to as colocation centre and spelled as co-location or colo for short, a third party data center. Its purpose is similar to any data center known to man, it is used to house various hardwares and softwares and is also backed up with adequate power system, cooling system, as well as security system – the difference lies in the fact that a colocation server does not only belong to a corporation or an organization. Colocation providers rent out the spaces in their data center and provide the IP and bandwidth to their clients. Not only that, these providers also offer additional services such as managing and maintaining servers.

Many people often confuse colocation hosting and dedicated web hosting for one another – a common misconception as at a glance they do not seem to offer a notably different service. The difference, however, lies in what you share and the control you have. In a managed, dedicated web hosting, clients use the same server that has been specifically designed to simultaneously host a large number of accounts, share available space and also, the same resources. You do not own administrative control whatsoever over the server and is charged an extra cost for the service, as it belongs to the web hosting provider.

Although a managed and dedicated web hosting seems very appealing to a first-timer with zero IT knowledge, a colocation server is a much reliable option for small corporations and businesses that needs full and complete control over their own servers. Choosing a colocation hosting means you own your own private server, as it only provides you the space, adequate support and security systems, IP and bandwidth. The fact that you have your own servers means you are in a total control of your own data and you have an upmost flexibility to manage and maintain your servers – making it a far more superior option.

There are so many advantages that come off renting a colocation server. Those who live far away from the colocation provider, or those who do not own a group of dedicated IT professionals to assist them in maintaining as well as managing the server on a regular basis, for instance – they can easily request additional service to do frequent maintaining and managing for a reasonable fee. Another advantage is the fact that providers typically own better storage when it comes to power, and better security system as your server is stored in a secured, and maintained environment.
