Insuring Your Holiday - Your Adventure, Fully Covered!

When it comes to insuring your holiday, the policy required is definitely much different for someone heading off on a Mediterranean holiday to spend time lounging on the beach, than for someone who is going on a safari, bungee jumping, skydiving, skiing and surfing or undertaking extreme sports.

High Risk, High Rates?

Obviously, someone who is going to participate in what is considered high-risk activities will be charged higher premiums than those going on so-called ordinary holidays. In fact, insuring your holiday with standard travel insurance may very much preclude anything that may happen during these adventures– something rather unfortunate, since these activities may be the primary reasons you will need insurance after all!

Does this mean you’ll be paying for the nose if you’re a sports enthusiast or other kind of active holidaymaker? Not necessarily, Sports insurance for a ski trip for instance, may cost very little– anywhere from ten pounds upward– a miniscule amount compared to the potentially huge costs of medical care for injuries, rescue from the site, transport to a specialized facility, repatriation and more!

Here are some tips to make sure you are sufficiently covered for your adventure!

Get Coverage For Your Specific Activities

Here’s the main tip when going about insuring your holiday: always check the fine print. Just as standard policies are rarely one-size fits all, specialized adventure holiday policies are rarely the same either. If you are planning to have adventures on land (skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking), sea (diving, surfing and snorkelling) or air (bungee-diving, parachuting or paragliding), you need to make sure you have the right policy for your kind of activity.

For instance, your coverage for skiing adventures may, strangely enough, not include coverage for operating a snowmobile or even snowboarding (it has been known to happen)! Inspect the conditions of your policy to ensure you’re covered for the specific activities you are planning to participate in.

Get Coverage For All The Countries You’ll Go

Single-country destinations are one thing, but if you are going on a multi-point adventure holiday - such as bird watching in different countries in Central or South America, safaris in different countries in South Africa or cross-country skiing in the Alps - it always helps to ensure you are sufficiently covered for all the points of your destination. Again, make sure you coverage includes the specific countries on your trip. You should also look out for the little things such as cover for lost, stolen and unused transfer tickets or passes, travel to different locations (for instance, in case pistes are closed due to avalanches in the case of ski trips) and more.

Get Coverage For Your Equipment

Lost or stolen baggage coverage is standard with many types of policies, but often with limitations. If you are travelling with specialized equipment such as skis, golf clubs and the like, insuring your holiday gear sufficiently may necessitate springing for a little extra to ensure replacement.
