Packing for a holiday can be a confusing exercise if you do not know how. This is especially so if you have got last minute hotel reservation and have to rush out for the holiday in the very next few hours. With so many people capitalising on three-day or two-day holiday weekends, the number of people realising the night before the travel that they are yet to pack is now a common phenomenon. However, it is quite easy to pack for a holiday if you know how.

The below list will allow you to prepare for the holiday of your life (or at least month) before panic sets in.

Categorise what you need

It is important to categorise what you need for your holiday. In addition to your daily wear, you will need nightwear, food, mobile phone and charger, electronic necessities, medicines, toothbrush, etc. Of these, there are some that you may not need. For instance, if you have opted for best hotel deals in Delhi NCR or other locations, or have taken luxury hotel deals with hotel discount coupons, then you are unlikely to need towels, toothpaste, toothbrushes, other bath products or slippers, as the hotels provide them on a complimentary basis.

Take care of the necessary things first

There are certain items you will definitely need. These are your wallet, mobile phone & charger, toothbrush, an extra pair of clothes and medicines for regular ailments. Once these are set aside or packed, go for the other stuff, which in order of importance are clothes, skin care products, soap and related items like razor and shaving cream / gel, camera, hand sanitizer, food to eat on the way, tissues, books, etc. Again, some of these items may change according to where you are going. For instance, a birding trip means you have to pack a pair of binoculars but a regular new city discovery holiday does not make it an essential item.

Pack according to the location and weather

You do not need beach trunks on a trip to the hills unless you intend to go into a river or intend to enjoy the beauty of a waterfall. Similarly, you are unlikely to need an umbrella if you head for Rajasthan’s desert but will definitely do so if you travel to Meghalaya’s hills. Pack according to the location you are travelling to. If you have opted for luxury hotel deals, then simply asking the hotel on the expected weather will also work.

Weather is perhaps the primary factor on how you will pack. If you are habituated to the cold, a light jacket will work for the hills in the summer but if you are not, then better bring your thermals also. A good way to know what to pack is this: if the temperature is below 10 degrees Celsius, pack heavy winter wear; if it is in the teens, pack a light to heavy jacket; if it is in the 20s, pack a light jacket for early morning or night and summer clothes for the day; and in the 30s, pack summer clothes. Also, a small travel tip if you are not used to humidity: check out humid places in the winters as they will be cooler and drier.

How you travel matters

Whether you travel by plane, train, bus or car will decide how you have to pack. Packing for a plane trip is the toughest or easiest how you look at it. If it is a short stay and you have only hand luggage, leave behind your scissors, penknife, nail file, or other such sharp tools. Travelling by car is the easiest to pack for. You can simply pack all you think you need and travel without any constraints on the luggage. Also, best hotel deals in Delhi NCR and elsewhere offer complimentary car parking but if you have a driver, then you may need to pay extra for his room. Again, luxury hotels in India offer discounted rooms for drivers and you are likely to save by asking the hotel if they have hotel discount coupons or otherwise give discounts for such facilities.
